CN27 : Asperger’s syndrome and mental health, managing anxiety. (Middletown Centre for Autism)

The course will have theoretical and practical components;

- Day one will consist of lectures and DVD material illustrating the presentation of a variety of mental health problems in people with ASD.
- Day two will have a practical focus on managing anxiety providing delegates with a range of strategies and approaches to help pupils with ASD manage anxiety.

At the end of the course delegates will have an understanding of the presentation of mental health problems in ASD, a clear perspective on the triad of impairments, executive function and theory of mind and their impact on mental health and some strategies to help pupils manage anxiety.

Aims :

To provide education professionals with information on the mental health aspects of ASD: This will include:

Day One
- A review of the triad of impairments with reference to mental health.
- A review of theory of mind and executive function and their impact on mental health.
- Information on the presentation of a variety of mental health problems.
- Strategies for the management of mental health problems.

Day Two
- Focus on anxiety
- A review of strategies to help manage anxiety
- Developing resources to help manage anxiety
- Planning to avoid anxiety.

At the end of the programme participants will be aware of:
- The presentation of mental health problems in ASD.
- The main impairments in ASD and how these may impact on mental health.
- Strategies for helping manage anxiety
- Resources for managing anxiety.

Target Group :

Staff working with children and young people with ASperger's syndrome.

Presenter Bio :

Fiona McCaffrey is Head of Research and Development at Middletown Centre for Autism; prior to this she was Deputy Chief Executive of Autism NI. Fiona has a MSc in Counselling and a PGDiP in Autism. she has developed and delivered a wide range of training sessions and resources on the mental health needs of people with ASD.

Frances O'Neill
Frances is an ASD Advisor/Trainer at Middletown Centre for Autism. Prior to this she worked for seven years in F/E lecturing in Early Childhood Studies and Working With Children and Young People with Special Educational Needs. She has a Masters in ASD and is particularly interested in the processes needed for successful transition and inclusion for adolescents with Asperger's syndrome.
