"Welcome to Summer School 2010"

Dear Colleague

Find below our portfolio of programmes for the 17th Annual RTU Summer School. Participation numbers have grown each year for the last 5 years (rising to nearly 3000 last year) indicating the profession's continuing thirst for learning and their inspirational commitment to doing the best for their pupils and young folk. The Summer School is now considered by teaching and educational professionals as a major professional development event and a most appropriate way to kick start the academic year.

This year the Summer School theme is 'Professional Learning Matters'. We draw our inspiration from the conclusions of the McKinsey report that "the quality of a schooling system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers" and the Department's emphasis through its new Workforce Strategy Directorate on the importance of all who work within the education system to embrace career long learning.

We continue with the RTU tradition of aligning the focus of Summer School to emerging policy aimed at transforming schools and the professional practice within and between schools.

This year's Summer School seeks to make a key contribution to the continuous professional development and capacity building agendas upon which successful school development and the raising of pupil's achievement depends upon by:

We seek to continue the long tradition of offering high quality and high impact programmes and experiences. Summer School provides an intensive and exciting week of workshops, lectures and seminars on a range of sub-themes: Raising Achievement and Building Leadership Capacity; Raising Achievement through classroom practice; Collaborative Learning approaches to Raising Achievement; Networking and ICT (exploring innovative approaches to raising achievement) and Personal Improvement and Development.

I am indebted to those colleagues across the education community and beyond who with great enthusiasm and energy seize the opportunity offered by Summer School to engage with teachers and other professionals in their unending pursuit of excellence.

An exciting new development this year is an impressive suite of professional development seminars and workshops offered by a number of our specialist schools. This provision testifies to the excellence which pervades these schools and their systems improvement motivation to afford professionals from other schools and contexts to draw inspiration and practical benefits from their approaches [CN76-CN89].

Thank you for your continuing interest and support.

Tom Hesketh
Director, RTU

'Professional Learning Matters'

Annually over 2000 educational professionals throughout the Northern Ireland schooling system attend the RTU Summer School. The Summer School is designed to be a professional development and networking event with the emphasis on: high quality and relevant programmes; professional dialogue; professional learning that matters; and exploration of topical and innovative issues. It will have purpose and meaning for: an individual's classroom practice; school leadership; and system wide policy/strategic developments.

The goal of Summer School is to offer a rich and varied programme, where professional learning matters. It is intended for a broad constituency of education professionals including: classroom assistants; teachers; SENCOs; middle and senior leaders; school principals; school support and development officers (CCEA, ELBs, CASS, C2K, RTU, CCMS, NICIE, CNaG,); ETI inspectors; governors; and education administrators.
